MARKETING: Drip Sequences

Learn how to set up automated email and automation drips to engage contacts after they join your audience.

What is a Drip Sequence?

Drip Sequences are automated messages that contacts receive after joining your Audience. You can schedule multiple emails to send at different intervals throughout a contact’s subscription period—for example, on Day 0 (signup), Day 3, Day 7, and Day 14.

These sequences help you maintain consistent communication with your contacts and streamline campaign management. Once configured, messages automatically trigger on the dates you specify, starting from when each contact is added to your Audience.

How do I create a Drip Sequence?

Start by navigating to Marketing > Audiences and selecting the Audience where you’d like to add a Drip Sequence.

From the Audience Details page, select the Drip Sequence tab at the top.

Click the + Drip button to get started.

You can create either an Email Drip or an Automation Drip. Let’s start with Email Drip.

Email Drip

Set up your Email Drip similar to a standard campaign email, with an added scheduling component.

Under Send After, specify the time interval from when the subscriber joins your Audience. Enter a number and choose your time unit: minutes, hour(s), day(s), week(s), or month(s).

Then fill in the Name, Subject, From Name, and From Email fields.

Click Next to continue.

Select your editing experience: the Content Block Editor, WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), or Code Editor for HTML and CSS work.

Add your Drip Settings:

Title: A label for your reference only.

Advanced Options: Check boxes to remove padding or suppress the email wrapper for additional customization.

Template Content

Both the Content Block Editor and WYSIWYG Editor support Dynamic Data Placeholders (DDPs) to automatically insert contact-specific information.

Compose your Message. Click Advanced Options to access the Remove padding and Suppress email wrapper settings. Attach files by dragging and dropping them or clicking Select Files.

Customize fonts by clicking the font icon.

Preview your email by clicking Preview, then select your device view (Desktop, Tablet, or Phone) to see how recipients will see it.

Click Save when finished.

Automation Drip

Return to + Add Drip and this time choose Automation Drip.

Decide the trigger timing by selecting Trigger After or Trigger Before, then set your interval time relative to the Based-On Date for your Audience.

Give your Automation Drip a name and click Configure Automations.

Click the + button to add each Automation. Once all automations are added, click Save to exit the configuration box.

Next, click Create. Your Automation Drip is ready to use!

Note: Automations only apply to Known Prospects and Clients in the portal. Email subscribers who aren’t Known Users won’t have automations applied.

*Automation Drip is only available to Pinnacle Accounts

How do I create a Reverse Drip Sequence?

Begin by creating a new Audience. Go to Marketing > Audiences > + ADD NEW AUDIENCE.

Name your Audience and select a Based-On Date. Start with Based on a Specific Date—this date anchors all subsequent Reverse Drip Sequences for this Audience. Enter the date, time, and timezone, then click Create.

Select this Audience from the list and click Drip Sequence.

Click + DRIP.

You’ll see two options: Send After and Send Before. Choose Send Before to set up a Reverse Drip Sequence.

Set the timing using the dropdown, enter a Name and Subject, then choose your editing experience. You’re now ready to fill in your Email Content.

Use Advanced Options to reveal Remove padding and Suppress email wrapper settings. Attach files by dragging and dropping or clicking Select Files.

Click Save and your Reverse Drip Sequence appears in the list.

To create another Reverse Drip Sequence with a different timing basis, add a new Audience and select Based on the value of Date Custom Field from the dropdown. Choose which Custom Field to use—your Reverse Drip will then be based on the date entered in that field.

After clicking Create, select this Audience and go to Drip Sequence in the navigation. Click + Drip.

Set your desired interval relative to the Custom Field date. Follow the same steps as before to complete the setup.

IMPORTANT: If you select Based on Day added to Audience when creating an Audience, you cannot create a Reverse Drip Sequence—only Send After is available. To enable Reverse Drip Sequences, edit your Audience to use Based on value of Date Custom Field or Based on a Specific Date.

What is a Drip Sequence Template?

A Drip Sequence Template is a pre-designed email format you can reuse as a starting point for new Drip Sequences. It saves time by providing a ready-made framework so you don’t recreate the same layout repeatedly.

How do I create a Drip Sequence Template?

Go to Marketing > Templates and click + Add Template. Select Drip Sequence Template as your Template Type.

Choose your Editor: the WYSIWYG Editor lets you switch to HTML anytime.

Give your Template a Title for your reference (this won’t appear when you apply it to a Drip Sequence).

You can select a previous Drip Sequence Template from the dropdown or start fresh.

Both editors support Dynamic Data Placeholders (DDPs) for personalizing contact information.

Use Preview to see how your email will look on different devices—click the desktop, tablet, or mobile icons to check each view.

Click Save when complete.

What happens next?

When creating a new Drip Sequence, your saved Template will be available in a dropdown menu. Select it to apply the template and then customize the email as needed!
