PROJECTS: Task Dependency

Set prerequisites and conditions for tasks to maintain project timelines automatically.

What is Task Dependency?

Some projects require that certain tasks be finished before others can move forward. Task Dependency lets you establish these prerequisites and control the workflow automatically.

IMPORTANT: Task Dependency is disabled when assigned to the Super Admin. This feature is only available on the Pinnacle Plan level.

How Do I Set up a Task Dependency?

Begin by going to Project > Project and choosing the project you want to modify.

Select Tasks from the top navigation bar.

Find the task you wish to configure and click Edit in the Options (3 dots) menu. The Task Dependency settings appear at the bottom of the edit form. You can also use these same steps when creating a fresh task.

Option 1: Due Date Dependency

This option ties the start of your current task to when another task is due. Switch the toggle to “On” to enable it.

Use the dropdown to pick which task your current one depends on, then enter the Days of Lag—this represents how many days before or after the predecessor task’s due date your current task should start.

Next, specify the Due Date by entering how many days you expect the work to take. For instance, if your current task should take about 10 days once the previous one finishes, enter 10. This way, your task automatically adjusts whenever the predecessor task’s timeline shifts, keeping your entire project on schedule without manual adjustments.

Option 2: Task Status Dependency

These options control whether a task can be edited or viewed before its prerequisite condition is satisfied.

To lock a task from editing until a condition is met, turn the toggle “On”. Select the prerequisite task from the dropdown, then choose which status it must reach (for example, “Completed”).

You can also hide the task entirely until the condition is satisfied. Check the option to hide the task, and set the Due Date based on when it becomes visible by choosing days or weeks and entering a number.

For example: if you want a task to stay hidden until a previous task is marked “Completed,” it will automatically appear once that happens. Since you may not know the exact completion date of the predecessor, estimate how long this task will take and enter that value for the Due Date.
